AROMATHERAPY

Even after a client moves into a room
where the scent isn't obvious, the emotionally healing molecules still activate the brain's limbic system.
After being exposed to essential oils, Japanese office workers reported a reduced number of illnesses, increased feeling of job satisfaction and higher standard of achievement.

Aromatherapy is a treatment designed to help by the correct use and application of essential oils obtained from plants. The word "aroma" means fragrance in plants, spices and other substances.  Applied to the skin essential oils can improve the beauty and health of the skin.

As the fragrance in a plant IS its essential oil, it is easy to see that aromatherapy is a treatment using essential oils. Laboratory studies are confirming the belief that essential oils can affect our emotions.

A 1991 study reported by Sugano Sato in the Chemical Senses Journal concluded that lavender, orange and rose helped to "elevate work efficiency and reduce stress levels.

A 1992 British study on Roman chamomile found that the aroma "shifted negative moods to positive feelings and increased the number of positive images the subjects were asked to visualize".

Background of Aromatherapy

The history of the use of aromatic oils on the body goes back at least 2,000 years before Christ. There are records in the Bible of the use of plants and their oils, both in the treatment of illness and as cosmetics.

In aromatherapy session we use mostly stroking movements, or effleurage as it is called, to apply the oils and lotions.

Effleurage improves venous flow, i.e., helps to remove congestion in the veins. Because of this the fresh blood can circulate more freely, taking nutrients to all the organs through which it passes. The absorption of waste products is hastened and the lymphatic circulation is improved. As an added bonus, it is extremely soothing and relaxing, particularly for nervous, irritated or over-tired people.

Favorite Recipe

Whenever I feel overwhelmed from stress, stuffy in my nose and head, have a scratchy throat and ache all over I prepare a hot bath and to it I add:

3 Drops of Eucalyptus
3 Drops of Peppermint
4 Drops of Lavender

I soak for approximately 20 minutes while listening to relaxing music. I go to bed early and awaken feeling much better.

The same results can be achieved using eucalyptus, peppermint and lavender in oils.
